Speakers Bureau Storyteller & Megaphone Vendor
James Witwicki is a long-time DTES resident, a UBC Arts grad, poet, speaker and long-time survivor of Bipolar Affective Disorder with psychosis. James’ mental illness was diagnosed in a hospital in 2012 and he began treatment with Lithium, Seroquel and other therapies from Strathcona Mental Health. In ensuing years, James felt it a miracle that he discovered a poetry group, a dance troupe and a local church practicing intentional community.
As he began sharpening his social skills and writing and speaking skills, he found the life he dreamed of for a single male without kids. During his years of undiagnosed mental illness. James worked in construction and was married for 15 years. But when his wife passed away in 2009, he focused his attention on this vibrant downtown community, quickly establishing a relationship with Megaphone that continues to this day.
In his recovery James has found freedom from most substances, healing from Hep C, and ongoing recovery from Bipolar Disorder. James feels his unique point of view on these issues, as well as on poverty and homelessness are what will be a benefit to Speakers Bureau audiences.
